Week 8 Lab: Name the Ground
Find two conflicting claims to be the canonical version of the same thing, and identify what each claim is actually resting on
Version 1.2 · Supersedes v1.1 · Status: CURRENT
- v1.1: Reassigned to different teaching staff; content unchanged.
- v1.0: Minor style revision.
12 April 2027
Before the session#
Find a real case where two people, or two systems, would each say their copy is the authoritative one: a shared document with a “final” version and a “pinned” version that disagree, two people who both consider themselves the keeper of the master file, a form with a version someone signed and a version someone else edited afterward. It has to be a real disagreement you can point to, not a hypothetical.
In the session#
For each of the two candidates, name which of the four grounds from lecture (possession, position, recency, consensus) it is actually relying on, even if nobody involved would use that word for it. Some claims rest on more than one ground at once; note that too.
Afterwards#
Say which candidate you would trust, and why, without letting “which one is newer” do the deciding. If recency is the only ground either side has, say so plainly. That is itself a finding, not a failure of the exercise.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- one real example of two candidate "canonical" versions of the same thing
- for each candidate, which ground (possession, position, recency, consensus) its claim actually rests on
- one sentence on which you would trust, and why, independent of which is more recent
