The Last Bus Out
You catch the last bus before the driver locks up for the night, and Blackwater Cove shrinks behind you into a scatter of grey roofs and one clock tower, its hands still turning the wrong way.
Aldous Penrose stays missing. The tide clock keeps running backward. Whatever the cove owes, and whoever pays it this time, happens without you — which was, you tell yourself, exactly the point of leaving.
You never do find out what the debt was for.
The end.
