Week 8: The Screenshot Economy
Week 8, composition and audience, and the uncomfortable truth that the rice exists to be photographed
12 April 2027
Here is the turn the course has been building toward. A rice is not finished when it works. It is finished when it has been photographed. The screenshot is the artefact, the setup is merely the means, and once you accept that, a great deal of otherwise irrational behaviour snaps into focus. The neofetch output posed just so, the terminal running a command chosen for how it looks rather than what it does, the wallpaper that peeks through gaps sized for the camera: these are composition, and composition implies an audience.
This lecture treats the screenshot as the designed object it is. We cover framing and what to leave out, the staged terminal and the ethics of showing a desktop doing something it never does, and the audience the image is really for, which is usually not the person who took it. This is also where the Defence begins. If the screenshot is the artefact, then every choice visible in it is a claim you can be asked to justify, and starting this week, you will be.
In this lecture#
- the screenshot as artefact, the setup as means
- composition: framing, staging, and what a good rice leaves out
- the audience, and who a desktop is really performed for
- the honest screenshot versus the one that lies about a life
Before next week#
Photograph your setup as if for r/unixporn, then again as it actually looks on a Tuesday. Bring both to the lab and be ready to account for the difference.
