Week 12: What you can see now

A last hour on what changes once you cannot stand in a line without reading it.

24 May 2027

There is no new material this week, so you can relax a little. The defences are on Wednesday, and this last hour is set aside for the thing that is genuinely hard to put into an assessment.

We go right back to week 1 and the queue we took apart on the board that day, and then we do the whole thing again with twelve weeks of vocabulary behind us. It usually takes about nine minutes now, where it took forty back then, and that difference is more or less the course.

Three things I want you to leave with

The arithmetic is the easy part. You have four pieces of it. They are enough to embarrass most people who design queues professionally, and you will find you can use them in a meeting.

The question is always the same one. Whose time did this decide was worth less, and were they told. Every technique in this course is a way of answering the first half. Nothing in it answers the second half, and the second half is the one that makes people angry.

The measurement is what makes the argument land. An objection to a queue carries no weight on its own; nearly everybody has one and they are easy to dismiss. The same objection with an arrival rate, a service distribution and a named group who waits longer is a different conversation, and it is the one this course has been training you for. Take the numbers with you.

Where this goes

A short list of where the material is used professionally, for the people who want to keep going. Operations, service design, transport and crowd safety, systems performance, and public administration, which needs it most and asks for it least.

After this lecture

You can walk into a place you have never been, watch a line for ten minutes, and say how long it is, why it is that long, who is paying for it and what one change would do. That is the whole course and it is a skill you keep.

Then

Wednesday, eight minutes each, and whoever you brought.
