How wide should my service time bins be

Thirty second bins make my histogram look flat. Five second bins make it look like noise. Is there a rule or is this taste?

Two hundred and six service times from the pharmacy. Median is about forty seconds.

At thirty second bins I get three bars and no information. At five seconds I get a comb. Somewhere between those is a picture of what is actually going on and I cannot tell which one it is.

  1. Marked as the answer

Start with bins about a quarter of the median service time and look at what happens. You are hunting for a shape, and the shape you care about here is whether there is one hump or two. If both bin widths show two humps, the two humps are real. If only one width shows them, they are an artefact and you say so in the journal.

  2. Plotted mine at 5, 15 and 30 seconds and put all three in the journal. The tutor comment said that was the right move, so I am passing it on.
