Week 7: Difficulty as Communication
Flow theory, resilient flow, and what a Soulslike is telling you when it kills you for the fifth time
Csikszentmihalyi’s flow model says engagement lives in a narrow channel between boredom and anxiety, with challenge tracking skill closely. Soulslikes appear to break this on purpose, holding difficulty well above the player’s current skill and letting repeated failure close the gap instead. That’s either a counterexample to flow theory, or a second channel it didn’t originally describe.
Outline#

- “resilient flow”: informative, consistent failure as its own kind of engagement
- what makes a Soulslike death informative rather than just punishing
- difficulty as a message, not just a dial
