LEDGER · 2,400 hours in type · Eleven years on test

Wren flew acceptance and envelope-expansion sorties before teaching, which is a job that consists almost entirely of finding out what an aircraft does at the edge of what it was cleared for, and then landing it anyway.

She wrote this course’s syllabus around the one thing that work taught her: an aircraft is not a thing you win against. It is a thing you are lent, and the only outcome the school records is whether it came back able to fly again.

She teaches weeks 1 to 4, runs the week 12 check rides, and signs the authorisation for your first solo. That signature is withheld until the gates covered in weeks 9 and 10 are met, regardless of how many attempts it takes.
