Ask Anyway

Crossing 4's fieldwork — invite a stranger on a spontaneous mini quest, decided on the spot, and risk a real no

Coming back from the break, the risk moves from what you’re offering to what you’re asking for. Crossing 4 doesn’t have a separate scale bar the way Crossing 3 did — the risk is built straight into the ask, because a real invitation can get a real no.

The brief

Ask a stranger to join you on a mini quest, decided on the spot — and risk hearing no.

Not a plan you made last night: something you decide in the moment, with whoever’s in front of you. Find the vending machine that’s rumoured to be broken and go check together. Ask someone to help you settle a genuinely pointless argument. Invite them to the food truck you’ve never tried. The quest matters less than the ask — small, real, made out loud, to someone who has every right to say no and might.

What you carry into next week

The ask itself, and the answer — yes or no, either one is reportable — plus whatever you noticed in yourself in the second before you said it out loud. The Rejection Report is where that gets told. Get a clip — wherever the quest went, or just you afterwards saying what the answer was. Fourth of your five for Legacy, and a no is as worth recording as a yes.

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
