Mission & structure
History
The foundation was first set up in 2014 by early Dogecoin contributors to give the project some formal backing. It went quiet for a few years, then relaunched in 2021 with several of the original team back on board alongside new advisors, with the stated goal of keeping Dogecoin going "for the decade ahead" rather than treating it as a one-off meme.
What it actually does
The foundation's own materials boil its purpose down to three things, summarised here rather than reproduced:
Development & advocacy
Funding the engineers who keep the Dogecoin software running.
Trademark defense
Preventing the Dogecoin name and logo being used for fraud.
A trailmap
A public roadmap for where the project goes next.
Legal structure
Dogecoin has no head office, but the foundation exists as a small set of registered non-profit entities across three countries:
- United Kingdom
- Much Wow Ltd and MadeUpNumbers Ltd, registered in England & Wales.
- United States
- Dogecoin Foundation and Much Wow Inc., registered in Illinois.
- Australia
- Dogecoin Foundation Australia, registered through PKF Sydney.
No individual board members are named publicly on the foundation's site; the people credited there are its site developers and designer, not its leadership.
