Who we are
M16 Artspace is a not-for-profit artist-run centre — it exists to give Canberra artists room to make and show work outside the commercial gallery system, rather than to sell it. It's shaped by the people who use it: the studio-holders and affiliated groups who work there are also who runs the place.
A short history
- 1985Founded as a home for artists working outside Canberra's commercial galleries.
- Following yearsOperated from a series of premises around Fyshwick as the organisation grew.
- 2010Relocated to its current home in Griffith — a former public library building, repurposed into galleries and studios.
What M16 supports
The Griffith building now houses three galleries and dozens of working studios, giving both emerging and established artists somewhere to practise and exhibit. Several affiliated arts organisations are based there too, running classes and activities that open the building up to the wider Canberra community, not just to the artists renting space in it.
