Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains
— a shrine, perpetually under construction, as all great works are —
In the last years of his life, an old man named Huang Gongwang walked the banks of the Fuchun River with a brush and a roll of paper and made the painting the Yuan dynasty is still remembered for. This shrine is a small, plain page for a very large obsession: one seven-metre scroll, the fire that nearly ate it, and the fool who painted it.
Start with the life of the man who took up painting seriously at fifty, wander into the scroll itself, read how it was nearly burned as a funeral offering in 1650, and leave through the webring for further reading elsewhere on the web.
