Links & further reading
No hyperlinked webring here — this shrine would rather not guess at addresses for museums and archives that might move or paywall between now and whenever you’re reading this. What follows is a plain bibliography instead: real institutions and books, worth searching for directly rather than trusting a decade-old link.
Where the real paintings live
Major public collections of Qi Baishi’s work include the National Art Museum of China and the Beijing Fine Art Academy in Beijing, the Palace Museum, and a number of pieces held abroad by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the British Museum in London. Search each collection’s own catalogue directly — that search box is more durable than any link this page could print.
Reading, if the biography page left you wanting more
- Any general survey of twentieth-century Chinese painting will place Qi Baishi alongside contemporaries like Xu Beihong and Huang Binhong — useful for seeing what made his plain, popular subjects unusual next to the literati mainstream of his day.
- Exhibition catalogues from the institutions above, where available, tend to reproduce the brushwork at a scale a general biography can’t.
