Found this looking for why my grandmother's coat was called sable when the label also said "farmed, China." Your subspecies page answered a question I did not know I had. She would have liked that someone finally wrote it down properly.
Guestbook
There is no form on this page, and that is deliberate. A guestbook in 1996 was a CGI script that appended to a text file and got overrun by robots within the year. This site runs no script at all, so the book is kept the honest way: you email me, and I type it in by hand, and it appears the next time I update. Slow, small, and impossible to spam.
To sign: send a note to the address at the bottom of the page with the name you want shown. Tell me what you know that I do not.
The book
Respectfully, the kolinsky brush section is going to ruin a lot of art students' assumptions. Mine included. I have owned three of those brushes and never once wondered what animal was actually in them.
Fifteen years reading fur-trade history and the subspecies table's note on Barguzin is the plainest statement of the naming issue I have seen. Most books just repeat the legend. Thank you for not doing that.
your site is so ugly and I love it. this is what the internet was supposed to be. do NOT redesign it.
Came for the delayed implantation fact after hearing it mentioned on a documentary and not quite believing it. Your field notes entry convinced me it was real before the second paragraph. Glad someone is keeping an actual paper trail on this animal.
Older entries are in a box somewhere. When I find the file I will put them up. Meanwhile: the field notes are the other half of this conversation, and Links will take you to people who know considerably more than I do.
