Strategy Lab
A trading-style analysis and risk plan drawing on chart reading, swing and day-trading concepts from the middle third of the course
The brief
Build and defend two trade plans — one swing, one day-trading — that survive someone else poking holes in them.
Strategy Lab is where chart reading (Week 4) and risk (Week 5) turn into actual plans, tested against both the swing (Week 6) and day-trading (Week 7) styles rather than just one. The mark is not for picking setups that “worked” — all data here is simulated, and the task does not ask you to prove either plan would have made money — it is for showing the reasoning and the risk control that would keep a small account intact regardless of outcome.
What you submit
One document containing two trade plans, each on its own simulated setup:
- A swing trade plan (roughly 400–600 words) and
- A day trade plan (roughly 400–600 words),
each separating observation, assumption, entry, invalidation, position size (with the calculation shown, not just a stop-loss price), and exit. Where a plan uses a moving average or VWAP, treat it as one piece of supporting evidence alongside the observation — not a standalone buy or sell signal. Each plan must state at least one condition under which it should not be traded at all. Simulated trades and data must be labelled as simulated throughout.
Before you submit
Re-read each plan as if you were the person poking holes in it: does the risk section stand on its own, or does it quietly depend on the trade going the way you hoped?
The spec
The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
- constructs one swing trade plan and one day trade plan, each on its own simulated setup
- separates observation, assumption, entry, invalidation, risk and exit explicitly in both plans
- includes a position-sizing calculation for each plan, not just a stop-loss price
- states at least one condition under which each plan should not be traded at all
How it is marked
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Chart reading and trade rationale | 35% |
| Risk and position-sizing plan | 45% |
| Recognising the plan's own limits | 20% |
