Week 11 Nap Lab: Before or after

A learning-and-recall Nap Lab run on the room, and a close reading of the study everyone cites for it

17 May 2027

The last Nap Lab, and the only one where the thing being measured is what you remember rather than how you feel. It also closes a loop the course opened in week 1, because the instruments you will use are the ones you were taught then.

Before the lab

In the lab

Learn, then split, then recall. The room learns a set of material under controlled conditions. Half then nap; half stay awake doing something undemanding. Both are tested at the same delay, so the only difference between the groups is what happened in the gap.

You will want to be in the nap group. Assignment is random, and the wanting is worth noticing: the expectation effect is exactly what makes self-reported study advice unreliable, and you are currently generating some.

The pooled result, and what it cannot tell us, twenty minutes. We put both groups’ recall on the board. One room, one session, one task — this cannot establish the effect and is not trying to. What it can do is show you the size of the noise, which is the thing that makes published effect sizes legible.

Reading the actual study, twenty-five minutes. We take one well-known consolidation paper and read the method rather than the abstract. How many participants, what task, what control, how long the delay, and what exactly was measured. Almost every over-claim you will meet about sleep and learning is visible at this level of reading, which is the transferable skill of the session.

Your exam period, last ten minutes. Individually: one thing you will do differently, and one observation that would tell you whether it helped. This is the Karolinska-and-reaction-time habit from week 1, pointed at yourself one last time.

Afterwards

That is the final Nap Lab. Next week is the synthesis session and it assumes you bring the workplace map from week 7, the two costings from week 8 and the named beneficiary from week 9 — the Nap Policy Proposal is assembled from those three, and week 12 is where it is defended rather than where it is started.

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
