Week 10: Where Craft Becomes Manipulation

Where the semester's own techniques tip into manipulation.

Everything taught so far makes an email more likely to be read and answered. None of it is free of an edge. This lecture draws that edge explicitly, rather than leaving students to find it by accident.

Before the lecture

This is just to get a quick understanding before the lecture. The examples and the rest are in the lecture, so it’s advisable you attend.

In brief

This week’s failure is manipulative craft: the same techniques taught all semester, tipped past the point of being honest about what the reader is looking at. A real deadline becomes an invented one; personalisation built at scale simulates a relationship that doesn’t exist. It matters because the technique itself doesn’t change, only whether the reader would still believe it if they knew exactly how it was produced, and that’s the test this lecture asks students to apply to their own work.
