Field Notes

Your raw notes from the first four Rounds, submitted as written, plus one page on what your own notes turned out to be blind to.

Due: 26 March 2027 · Weight: 25%

Hand in the notes you actually made in weeks 1 to 4. Not a tidied version — the pages as they came out, crossings-out included. If they are on paper, scan them. If they are typed, do not edit them now.

This feels wrong to submit and that is deliberate. Polished notes are not notes, they are an essay pretending to be evidence, and the skill being marked here is the one that happens in the room at the time.

Each set needs a header: where, what day and hour, how long you stayed, and how the notes were taken — in the room, or written up afterwards and how long afterwards. Week 1 asked for one method and week 3 was indoors; where you departed from the brief, say so and say why. A stated weakness costs you nothing here. A hidden one costs you the method marks.

The blind spot page

One page, written now, looking back across all four sets.

Find something you consistently did not record. Everybody has one. Some people never write down what anything cost. Some never note anyone’s approximate age, or never note women, or never note the staff as people rather than as furniture. Some record speech and no movement. Some have four sets of notes in which nobody is ever visibly unhappy.

Name yours, show it with examples from your own pages, and say what you think it is a symptom of. This page is 30% of the mark because it is the part that transfers: the Place Audit is due in four weeks and you will be observing with the same eyes unless you know what they skip.

Format. PDF, notes plus the one page, your name on it. No word limit on the notes — they are whatever length they are.

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
