Week 8 Tute: Studio
Week 8, shared creative and maker spaces, noise, mess and equipment
19 April 2027
Studios, workshops and lab benches run into problems offices rarely see: noise that can’t be muted with headphones, mess that’s part of the process rather than a failure to tidy, and equipment that only one person can use at a time. A single laser cutter or 3D printer with four projects due the same week turns into an unofficial queue nobody agreed to, enforced by whoever’s willing to hover near the machine the longest, which quietly rewards the person with the most free time, not the person whose work is actually most urgent. The coexistence norms have to flex around the work itself, not just around people’s moods.
Before the session#
Observe a shared studio, workshop or lab space (yours or one you can visit) and log at least one moment where two people wanted the same resource (a machine, a bench, quiet) at the same time. Note how it got resolved.
In the session#
We compare studio norms against office norms from Week 7, and check in on protocol-design: your test log should cover at least three days of real use by now, with honest notes on what broke.
Afterwards#
Keep testing your protocol through the rest of the week; the assessment is due at the end of it.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you have observed a shared maker, creative or lab space and logged at least one resource-contention incident
- your protocol-design test log covers at least three days by the end of this session
- you can name one norm from a studio-type space that wouldn't transfer to an ordinary office
