Week 3 Tutorial: Watching the Panel and the Door

A short field observation of an elevator boarding sequence, framed by the lecture's fixed-capacity, high-density reading of the space.

10 August 2027

Activity

Watch (or recall in detail) an elevator boarding sequence: who reaches for the panel, who holds the door, and where each rider positions themselves relative to the others.

Record your reaction

If you can, time how long a held door actually costs the people already inside, against how long waiting for the next car would cost the person who didn’t make it.

Reflection

In your own words, explain why the lecture describes the elevator as the “purest small-scale power structure” in the built environment — and how the Bad manner / Good manner pair from this week’s deck turns on exactly that cost comparison.
