Week 8 Session: Hold Music

Week 8. What you are given during a wait is authored material, with a genre, a history and an economics.

19 April 2027

Sterne treats the music in the Mall of America as architecture rather than atmosphere: programmed, purchased, and doing a job the building needs done. Read it for the method and not for the mall. The same reading applied to a phone queue is this week.

The corpus is ours to build. In the workshop we assemble a set of hold scripts from the cohort, transcribed rather than described, and read them as written texts. A transcript makes visible what a summary hides, which is the ordering and the timing.

In the workshop

The workshop also covers the withholding technique this course is named after. An infomercial interrupts its own close to add a second offer, and the interruption is the mechanism: a thing about to end is made to continue, and the continuation is presented as a gift rather than as an extension. The same move runs in hold scripts and in checkout flows. Handle it as a technique with a structure, because that is what it is.

Bring a transcript. Thirty seconds of it is enough.

But wait, there’s more

Time the loop on a hold system and it is often somewhere near fifteen seconds before the recording repeats. Long enough that you do not notice the seam straight away, short enough that the licence stays cheap. Listen for the fifteen second loop the next time you are on hold and see how long it takes you to hear the join.

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
