The course-wide rules on marks, late work, extensions, academic integrity and getting help.

Policies and support

When marks are released

Marks for this course are released in week 12. Not for individual pieces of work as they are marked, and not on a rolling basis. All of it, in week 12.

This is a deliberate delay and it is part of the course. Week 11 is on duration neglect and the peak-end rule, which is the research on why the end of an experience carries more weight in memory than its middle. You will be reading that material while waiting for your own results, and you are invited to argue with the policy using it.

Two things this policy is not. It is not a claim that the delay is good for you, which is the argument every withheld thing makes about itself. And it is not negotiable individually, because a queue that moves for whoever asks is the failure week 7 is about.

If you need a mark released earlier for a documented reason, such as a scholarship or a visa deadline, email the convenor with the deadline and evidence of it. That exception is granted on the document rather than on the request.

Late work

Penalty
5% of the item's available marks per day late, counted in whole days from the due time
Floor
after 7 days the item scores zero
Scope
every item except the Studio Presentation, which happens in a room on a day and cannot be handed in late

A day is a whole day from the due time, so an hour late and twenty-three hours late cost the same. Once an item has reached the floor, the conversation to have is about the course rather than the piece.

Extensions

Ask before the due time.

Short extension
up to 5 days, granted by the convenor on the request, with no documentation
Longer extension
beyond 5 days, needs documentation and goes through the university's process
You hear back
a decision within 2 working days of the request

The turnaround is published because it is the course’s own wait. This course does not get to argue that delay is designed and then leave you refreshing your inbox for an answer it has already reached. If the turnaround passes without a decision, send the email again and say it is the second one.

The one exception already decided is above. If a documented external deadline requires your final mark before week 12, that is granted on the document.

Academic integrity

Your work is your own. Where you used a tool, a collaborator or a source that shaped the work, say so in the submission. The Wait Log in particular is data you collected, and fabricated entries are the one thing in this course that cannot be argued into being interesting.

Getting help

Ask in the workshop first, because most questions are shared and answering one in the room answers it for everybody who had it.

For anything that does not fit a workshop, there is consultation. The convenor is available Wednesdays from 14:00 to 15:30 during teaching weeks. The tutor stays for thirty minutes after each Thursday workshop, in the workshop room.

Both are drop-in. Neither takes bookings, because a booking system is a queue with an admission test on the front of it, and week 7 is about what that does to the people who fail the test.
