Week 10: Delay on purpose

Latency added rather than removed, and the line between a deception that serves the person and one that serves the system.

4 May 2027

Every week so far has assumed the delay was there and the question was what to do about it. This lecture removes that assumption. Systems add delay on purpose, and some of the reasons are good ones.

Adar, Tan and Teevan give the category a name and a defence. Brignull catalogues the same techniques where the beneficiary is the other party. The lecture puts the two side by side and refuses to give you a rule for telling them apart, because there is not one that survives contact with a real case.
