Week 10 Session: Movement and Encouragement Lab

Replace fixed poses and critical language with simple actions, specific encouragement and short sequences that help the subject relax.

SLOP1810WEEK 1026 April 2027

Before the session

Choose four simple actions from the lecture and write one destination, hand task and gaze cue for each. Bring one ordinary object the subject can genuinely use. Select three lines from the toxic photographer’s bible and rewrite them in your own words as respectful, actionable encouragement.

In the session

1. Find the stiff baseline

Ask for one static portrait and notice where uncertainty appears in the hands, shoulders, weight, gaze and expression. Do not criticise the subject; identify which direction was missing.

2. Build a movement sequence

Photograph walking, turning, sitting or leaning. Give each movement a clear start and destination. Add only one hand or gaze task at a time and use short bursts to capture the transitions.

3. Practise the encouragement bible

After every sequence, state one specific success before changing anything. When a frame fails, describe the photographic adjustment you will make instead of assigning the failure to the subject.

4. Let the subject evaluate the process

The subject ranks each prompt for clarity, comfort and how recognisable the result feels. Repeat only the strongest action with one small improvement.

Afterwards

Submit an eight-frame contact sheet showing four actions and their transitions. Include the exact direction and encouragement used for each pair.

Finish with two statements: one phrase you will never use again, and one specific sentence that helped the subject feel successful.
