Brief

Plan and complete one portrait shoot with your partner, then submit the original photographs and a detailed account of the plan and photographic reasoning.

This task focuses on preparation and decisions made at the time of capture. Use what you have learned about your partner, the intended experience, the location and the photograph you want to make to design the session before you begin shooting.

Post-production is not part of this assessment. Select from the original files created by your camera or phone and submit them without cropping, retouching, colour grading, AI editing or other image alterations.

Deliverables

Submit both parts:

  1. Original photographs — 50%. A selected set of unedited photographs from the partner shoot. The teaching team assesses the photographic decisions visible in the original captures.
  2. Planning and photographic rationale report — 50%. A detailed report explaining the overall session design, including the intended result, date and shoot arrangements, location, timing, partner preferences, and the reasoning behind the approach to framing, light, direction and capture.

The report should make clear how the plan and photographic choices work together. It is not an editing log, and no edited versions are required.

Marking approach

The teaching team assesses the photographs and report separately, then combines the two equally weighted results. Technical quality matters where it supports the intended portrait, but the photographs are judged together with the purpose and reasoning established in the report.

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
