Week 6 Session: Background Rescue Lab
Turn one ordinary location into clean centre, thirds, negative-space and layered portraits by moving the photographer rather than replacing the place.
Before the session#
Choose an ordinary campus or street location with at least three visible distractions: people, signs, bins, cars, poles, bright patches or messy lines. Bring a phone or camera with grid lines enabled. Do not choose a blank studio wall; the exercise needs a background to solve.
In the session#
1. Make the default tourist frame#
Photograph the person and location in the most obvious way. Keep this as the baseline rather than deleting it.
2. Rescue the background by moving#
Keep the subject in roughly the same area while the photographer moves left, right, higher, lower, closer and farther. Identify which movement removes each distraction.
3. Build four structures#
Produce a centre composition, a rule-of-thirds frame, a negative-space frame and one layered frame using foreground. At least one image must keep enough environment to identify the place.
4. Scan the edges#
Partners inspect each other’s four frame edges, the outline around the head and shoulders, and the brightest background object. Reshoot one frame after this inspection.
Afterwards#
Submit the baseline tourist photograph and the four revised compositions. Annotate what the photographer changed in position, distance or height and which distraction it solved.
The subject chooses the frame where they are easiest to notice without losing the feeling of the place. Include that reason with the contact sheet.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you photograph one subject in four clearly different composition structures
- each version removes or deliberately controls visible background distractions
- one frame uses foreground and one preserves recognisable environmental context
- the final selection explains why the person remains visually clear
