Week 11 Tutorial: The Worst Case Study
The semester's harshest teardown — a pay-toilet or turnstile kiosk with no alternative, real urgency and real embarrassment
3 May 2027 incentive
Before the tutorial#
No fieldwork required this week — the case is confronting enough that it’s handled as a shared discussion rather than individual assignment.
In the tutorial#
We work through pay-toilet and turnstile kiosks as the starkest version of this course’s whole argument: no alternative, real time pressure, real embarrassment, and — where findable — a franchise contract sitting behind the machine. The discussion turns on whether “worse” and “more profitable” are actually the same claim here.
Afterwards#
If this week’s machine unsettled you, that’s the point — bring the same scrutiny to your own final project category, including the parts that don’t feel dramatic.
Who benefits when the design is bad?
The spec
What you bring to the tutorial. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- your group names the franchise or contract behind the machine, if one is findable
- you can separate "worse for the user" from "more profitable for the operator"
- you identify the exact point exact change or a specific app is required, and why
