Week 11: Exact Change, or Else

Pay toilets and turnstile kiosks as the starkest captive case this semester studies, and the franchise contract usually behind them

Outline

The argument

A pay toilet or a turnstile kiosk with “exact change only” combines every condition this course has been isolating separately: there’s no real alternative, the urgency is real rather than manufactured, and the embarrassment of being stuck is about as high as a one-shot interface gets. If any machine this semester makes the argument without needing much interpretation, it’s this one.

“Exact change only” surviving decades of otherwise-relentless redesign cycles is itself a clue — coin-only mechanisms are cheaper to maintain and harder to defraud, and a franchise or concession contract is usually sitting behind that choice, protecting a margin rather than a mechanism. The harder question this week asks is whether “worse for the user” and “more profitable for the operator” are actually two separate claims here, or the same fact stated from two different seats.

Question to carry: if the operator redesigned this machine purely for their own benefit, would anything about it actually change?
