Week 12 Workshop: Fifteen minutes each
Twelve lines, read aloud, in a language you built. Then somebody who has never seen it reads a sentence back to you
13 May 2027
Before the session#
No screening this week. Rest, and read your text through twice.
Bring three things: your text, your script legible on paper, and your week one design brief.
In the session#
Fifteen minutes each. You read, a stranger reads a sentence back, and the room asks questions for the remaining time.
The read-back is done by somebody from outside the course who has had no preparation and is given your writing alone — no gloss, no pronunciation guide, no help from you. Some of it will be read incorrectly. What matters is whether those errors are ones your language could have prevented.
Afterwards#
Submit the language itself by the following Friday — the full description, the lexicon, the script, and the text with an interlinear gloss. The crit is marked inside that submission rather than separately, so what you are handing in is the language itself, together with the evidence that it worked when used.
After that the language is yours. Nobody else speaks it, which was also true in February, though it now describes something that exists.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you read a text of at least twelve lines aloud in your language, at speaking pace
- a person who has not seen your language reads one sentence of it correctly from your script alone
- you can answer "why" for any choice in your grammar without appealing to taste
