Week 8 Seminar: Recasting
The character stays and the actor changes. Say nothing, explain it in the story, or refuse to recast at all.
28 April 2027
The technique#
A recast replaces the actor and keeps the character. There are four options: say nothing, acknowledge it and move on, explain the new face inside the story, or retire the character with the actor.
The cases#
- Say nothing. Edward Norton plays Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk (2008). Mark Ruffalo plays him from The Avengers (2012). No one on screen mentions it.
- Acknowledge it. Terrence Howard plays James Rhodes in Iron Man (2008). Don Cheadle takes over in Iron Man 2 (2010), and his first scene tells the audience to deal with it.
- Explain it. When Ruby Rose left Batwoman after its first season, the show gave the suit to a new character, Ryan Wilder. Kate Kane came back later with a new face and a new actor, Wallis Day, and the plot explained the face.
- Refuse. After Chadwick Boseman died in 2020, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) did not recast T’Challa. The film is about his death.
In the seminar#
Each option spends something different. Saying nothing spends the audience’s goodwill. Explaining it spends plot. Refusing spends the character. Choose a recast you think took the wrong option, and argue the cost of the right one.
Learning outcomes
This seminar works towards:
- Design a repair (retcon, reboot, multiverse or recast) and argue what it costs.
What to bring
Have these done before the seminar starts.
- you have watched Rhodey's first scene in Iron Man 2 (2010)
- one recast from the MCU, the Arrowverse or Ninjago, and which of the four options it took
