Week 3: Designing a Repair
The four repairs side by side, and how to count what each one costs before you commit to it.
9 March 2027
Every repair in this course fixes one thing by breaking another. This lecture sets the four side by side, so the seminars that follow can take them one at a time.
| Repair | What it changes | Seminar |
|---|---|---|
| Retcon | what an earlier scene meant | week 3 |
| Soft reboot | which parts of the continuity are still honoured | week 4 |
| Multiverse | which universe a fact belongs to | week 7 |
| Recast | the face, not the character | week 8 |
Outline#
- What each repair touches, and what it leaves alone.
- Counting the cost. The scenes that stop working, and the viewers who remember them.
- Choosing. Why the Retcon Proposal asks you to reject the other three, and why the cost carries the most marks.
Learning outcomes
This lecture introduces:
- Design a repair (retcon, reboot, multiverse or recast) and argue what it costs.
