Week 12 Shift: Handover
You write the document that outlives you, hand the sandbox to next year's cohort, and leave your home project properly
24 May 2027
The last Shift, and the only deliverable in this course written for people you will never meet.
Before the Shift#
Your Governance Redesign is due at noon. Bring the rationale register, the week 10 dissent, and the week 11 audit.
In the Shift#
Write the handover. What exists, what it does, what was decided, what was decided against and why, which rules exist because of one specific incident in week 8, and who to ask when the register does not cover it. Assume the reader is competent, has no context, and will not be able to reach you.
Then the part most volunteers skip. Go back to your home project and post a closing note: what you did, what you left unfinished, and whether you are staying. Some of you will be staying, and the honest version of that sentence is worth more than a polite one.
We end by reading the 2026 cohort’s handover note aloud, including the parts that turned out to be wrong, and then sealing yours for the 2028 cohort to do the same to.
Afterwards#
The sandbox passes on. The Continuity of Service policy requires it, and for once the policy is right.
The spec
What you bring to the Shift. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- the handover note records what exists, what was decided, and what was decided against
- every live rule has a rationale a stranger can read without asking anyone
- you have posted a closing note on your home project, or stated that you are staying
- the succession is named — who holds what, from when
