Week 10 Shift: Fork drill
The scenario that asks what your leverage actually is, run as a decision under time pressure with people who will be harmed either way
10 May 2027
A decision, not a discussion. There is a clock, and at the end of it the cohort has to have done something.
Before the Shift#
Read Ren’s account of June 2023, posted to the sandbox. It is the long version and it is not flattering to anyone in it.
In the Shift#
The scenario lands at the start of the Shift and you have ninety minutes. The sandbox’s host has announced a change that the cohort broadly objects to. Your options are the real ones: comply, protest, go dark, or fork and take the community with you.
Work the costs. Going dark means the queue is unattended and the people you protect are exposed for the duration — that cost falls on them, not on the party you are bargaining with, and every honest account of 2023 has to start there. Forking means the data, the tooling and the people, and you cost all three before you claim it is an option.
Whatever the cohort decides, the dissent is written down by the dissenters, in their words, and kept.
Afterwards#
Recorded in the Log, including by the people who lost the vote. In week 12 you will hand this record to next year’s cohort.
The spec
What you bring to the Shift. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- the decision states its aim and the condition under which it would end
- you identified who bears the cost, separately from who you are bargaining with
- a fork was costed against the data, the tooling and the people it would need
- the dissenting position is recorded in full, by its holders
