Week 10 Crit: Receiving
The live clinic on taking a note without performing gratitude or mounting a defence --- the half of the skill nobody drills.
26 April 2027
Bring#
Work that’s already been through a crit this semester, and the notes it got.
The crit#
One person’s work, one note at a time, live: the note gets read, and before anything else the person it’s aimed at has to repeat it back accurately — not agree with it, just prove they heard the specific claim, not a generalised sting. Only after that can they respond. Most of what goes wrong in receiving a note happens in the gap between hearing it and repeating it, which this format makes impossible to skip.
Leaves with#
Practice separating “I heard the specific claim” from “I agree with it,” which turns out to be most of what makes a room safe to give real notes in.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can repeat a note back accurately before responding to it
- you can name one note this semester you initially dismissed and later used
