Week 3 Crit: Visual art
The first peer crit round, on a piece of visual work, testing the specificity-and-falsifiability theory from this week's lecture.
8 March 2027
Bring#
A piece of visual work you’ve made — a drawing, a photo, a layout, whatever you’ve got — and, separately, one note ready to give on someone else’s.
The crit#
Work goes up one at a time. Before anyone speaks, the room has sixty seconds to write a note in silence: what specific choice in the piece the note is about, and what would have to be true of the piece for the note to be wrong. Notes get read aloud after, not before, so the first reaction in the room isn’t whoever spoke fastest.
Leaves with#
One note given and at least one received that both pass this week’s lecture test — specific enough to point at, falsifiable enough to argue with.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- your note names a specific region, choice or technique in the piece, not the piece as a whole
- your note says what you'd expect to see if you were wrong about it
