Week 4 Session: Eye Level
The shelf at a child's eye height is not for adults, and it is not an accident either — it is the store's smallest, most patient argument, repeated one metre off the ground
15 March 2027
Before the session#
Stand in one aisle. Without moving your head, list everything at eye level. Then look down, and do it again.
In the session#
Perec’s method — the exhaustive inventory of what is actually there, before any of it is interpreted — is how this week works. Eye-level shelf space is rented, not given, and its price tells you exactly whose attention the store considers valuable: an adult’s, a child’s pulling at a sleeve, a brand’s whose placement fee bought that shelf specifically. Nothing here is subtle once you have counted it.
Afterwards#
Bring your inventory to week five; the endcap is what happens when this same logic stops pretending to be subtle.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name one product placed at a height that isn't yours to reach
- you can list, Perec-style, everything at your own eye level in a single aisle without looking twice
- you can say who decided your eye level was worth more shelf space than someone else's
