Week 7 Session: Trade Route Planning Workshop
Plan a cargo run across a simplified risk/reward map, then price it the way an insurance market would have to.
12 April 2027
Before the session#
Read Week 7’s lecture on logistics and frontier economics. Bring nothing — the map and the risk data are provided.
In the session#
Working from a simplified risk/reward map (loosely modelled on a null-sec-style frontier), plan a cargo run: what to carry, which route to take, and how much risk that route actually represents. Then work out what an insurance market would charge to cover that run, and compare it against the cargo’s expected profit.
- 10 minutes: introduction to the map and its risk zones
- 25 minutes: route planning in small groups
- 15 minutes: compare routes and insurance prices across groups
Afterwards#
There’s no assessment tied directly to this session — it’s here to build intuition for risk-as-cost before Week 9’s comparative teardown, where that intuition gets applied across three different games at once.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- your planned route states an explicit risk estimate for at least one leg of the journey, not just a distance
- you calculate what an insurance premium would need to be for the run to break even against that risk
