Week 7 Lab: Lab 2 — One boss, twenty deaths

Three hours on a single fight you cannot yet beat, with one written line per death. If you win in six attempts you have picked the wrong boss

21 April 2027

Three hours, one fight. Bring headphones and a save file parked in front of something that is currently beating you.

Before you arrive

Have a game installed with discrete boss encounters and a short walk back. Any of the Souls-likes qualify. Avoid open-world games where you can go and do something else when a fight goes badly — leaving is the behaviour we are studying and today you need to not have the option.

If you have no save, arrive an hour early; Yuki keeps prepared saves parked in front of a few reliable early bosses.

What happens

You die a lot, and after each death you write one line before going back through the fog:

Attempt N. This time I died because ______, so next time I will ______.

Fifteen seconds, on the walk back. Not afterwards.

Around attempt ten Yuki will come round and read your log, and the question will be the same for everyone: which of these lines could the next attempt actually settle? I was impatient settles nothing. It always sweeps after the second swing settles in ninety seconds.

If you win too early

Find a harder fight. A boss you beat in six attempts taught you nothing about building a model, because you never had to build one — and building one is the entire transferable skill. Yuki has a list of fights that reliably take twenty.

Afterwards

The log, brought to week 8, with the flip marked: the attempt where deaths stopped feeling like things that happened to you and started feeling like mistakes you could name. Nothing about the boss changed at that point, which is what makes the flip worth being able to recognise. In week 8 you build the same apparatus for a subject, where the flip takes a fortnight instead of an hour and is correspondingly easier to miss.

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
