Case 07 — The full workup

Combining independent methods from weeks 3 to 7 into one report on a mixed-media case, with a confidence level the evidence actually earns

5 April 2027

Assignment 2 is due today. This is the hinge session of the course: the last one built entirely on inferring from an artefact, before week 7’s lecture introduces the idea of a record that doesn’t require inference at all.

Before the session

Submit Assignment 2 before the session starts.

In the session

A short peer-review round: swap reports with someone else in the room and check one thing only — does their stated confidence level actually match the evidence they present, or did their conclusion get ahead of their proof? This is the single most common failure mode in real forensic writing, and it’s worth catching in each other’s work before your marker catches it in yours.

Afterwards

Half the course is behind you. From here, the emphasis shifts from “can you run each method” to “can you tell when a method has reached the end of what it can support.”

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
