Week 5 Audit: What a pitch's framing hides
An informational/creative audit --- checking what "the same job, done faster" quietly leaves out of its own description
22 March 2027
This week’s notice argues that automating routine coverage doesn’t leave a smaller newsroom behind, it leaves a different one. That’s a subtler claim than earlier weeks’ straightforward cost-and-capability arguments, and it’s worth being able to state plainly rather than just gesturing at.
Before the session#
Bring one kind of story a beat reporter produces that the pitch’s own description of the job — “assembling public information into copy” — would never lead you to expect.
In the session#
Small groups draft one sentence each stating what changes about a newsroom’s relationship to its community, not just its output volume. Share and compare.
Afterwards#
Note in your Weekly Audit Log where you’d look for evidence either way — what would confirm or disconfirm “the institution changed kind” for a real newsroom you could actually check.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name a category of local-journalism story this week's pitch never mentions, and say why the migration path wouldn't produce it
- you can explain why "a thinner institution" is a different claim than "a smaller institution"
