Roasted coffee beans pouring from a vintage drum roaster into a cooling tray

Since the beginning

Neighbourhood folk, kept simple.

Ten-plus years in Braddon, one vintage roaster, and a belief that good coffee shouldn't be complicated.

What Barrio believes

Simplicity and quality, every day

Barrio describes itself simply as a neighbourhood coffee bar and roaster — the idea being that good coffee should be accessible and kept uncomplicated, something people can enjoy every day rather than save for a special occasion. That's shaped everything from the short, focused menu to a café that's built to feel like part of the street it's on, not a destination in itself.

The roastery

A 1950s Probat L5, still turning

The coffee itself is roasted off-site, at Barrio's roastery at Dairy Road in Fyshwick, on a 1950 Probat L5 — a vintage German drum roaster. It's a deliberately old-fashioned way to roast at this scale, and it's the same roaster behind every bag sold in Braddon, every wholesale account around Canberra, and every cup poured at either café.

Growing up, not out

From one café to two

For years, Dairy Road was purely a working roastery behind the Braddon café out front. After roasting there for close to a decade, Barrio recently opened a small espresso bar right next to the roastery itself — close enough to the beans that it can pour blends the Braddon shop doesn't have room for. It's less an expansion than a natural next step: the same coffee, the same neighbourhood approach, just closer to where the roasting happens.

Community

Part of the street, not just on it

Barrio calls itself "neighbourhood folk" first — the coffee bar exists to be a small, dependable part of the community around it, in Braddon and now in Fyshwick too. That same coffee also shows up well beyond Barrio's own counters, through wholesale accounts at cafés and kitchens across Canberra.
