Chapter 2 · The First Echo
Demo chapter · Original text written to showcase reading typography, not the book's real text
What truly jolted Su Wan awake was the instant of falling. The floor gave way beneath her without warning, too fast even to cry out — she only remembered the wind roaring past her ears, and then that bell again, familiar yet strange, tolling lower than the first time.
She braced to land hard on cold ground, but opened her eyes to find herself standing exactly where she'd started, a faint glow still clinging to her fingertips. An unfamiliar voice rose in her mind — not spoken by anyone else, but as if it had grown out of her own body: "Echo: Borrowed Force — you may return a fall to someone else."
- duskfox92: "Borrowed Force" naming itself out loud in her head is such a good way to introduce a power without an info dump.
- pinecone_id: "you may return a fall to someone else" sounds useful and horrible at the same time.
- starlit_orbit: waiting to see who she ends up using this on first.

At the end of the corridor, a boy with a canvas backpack was watching her — no surprise in his eyes, only a knowing look, as if this were exactly what he'd expected. "So you've awakened too." He paused, holding out water to her. "For the next nine days, we'd better decide whether we're going to depend on each other."
- quietrain: "no surprise, only a knowing look" — he's clearly done this cycle before.
- moth_and_lantern: offering water before asking for anything is either genuinely kind or a very good opening move.
