Chapter 1 · Waking in the Land of the End

Demo chapter · Original text written to showcase reading typography, not the book's real text

Su Wan woke to the sound of a bell. Not an alarm — the long, trailing toll of an old wall clock, one strike after another, throbbing behind her temples. She opened her eyes to find not her own ceiling above her, but a grey-white dome of some material she couldn't place.

  • duskfox92: That bell instead of an alarm clock got me immediately, this already feels wrong in a good way.
  • quietrain: "a ceiling she couldn't place" is doing a lot of work in one sentence.

A yellowed notice was pasted to the wall, though the ink looked freshly written: "Welcome to the Land of the End. Time outside has stopped. Here, ten days make one cycle — survive to the tenth day and you may leave; fail, and you begin again from day one, remembering nothing."

  • starlit_orbit: "freshly written" ink on a notice that's already yellowed is the detail I'm going to be thinking about.
  • reader_qwq: calling it now, "remembering nothing" is going to matter a lot later.
  • pinecone_id: ten days, reset to day one — this is going to be a rough first cycle for everyone.

She stared at those lines for a long time, until footsteps sounded from the far end of the corridor. More than one person. Only then did it hit her that she wasn't trapped here alone — and that the notice's final line was the part that truly chilled her: "On day one, you decide among yourselves who gets to live."

  • duskfox92: "you decide among yourselves" is so much worse than a monster would've been.
  • moth_and_lantern: footsteps right after that line is such a mean piece of pacing, well played.
