Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Operating companies

The 70 businesses Berkshire owns, and what each one does.

Berkshire is best described by what it owns. Head office is small, the subsidiaries are left to run themselves, and so a grouped list of the companies says more about the group than any description of the parent.

What is ours and what is Berkshire's. The company names and links are Berkshire's own, and so are the five groupings — its annual filing describes the group as insurance, freight rail, utilities and energy, then manufacturing, services and retailing. Deciding which company belongs in which group, and writing the one-line description of what each one does, is our work: Berkshire publishes neither. Everything else on this page is sourced below.

Insurance

Berkshire's largest activity, and the one that funds the rest. Written both directly and as reinsurance.

Freight rail

One company, and one of the largest businesses Berkshire owns outright.

  • BNSF
Operates a freight railroad across the western United States.

Utilities and energy

Generation, transmission and distribution, held under a single group company.

Manufacturing

Industrial and consumer products, from aerospace components to building materials to clothing.

Services and retailing

Distribution, aviation services, furniture, jewellery, food and the rest of what Berkshire sells directly to people.
