Do I have to pay?
Not to start. Unity is free for hobbyists and small teams — but which plan you're allowed to use depends on how much money is involved and what you're building, and both are easy to get wrong.
Personal
Free
Hobbyists and small teams. Games and entertainment applications only. Publish to web, desktop, AR/VR and mobile. Eligible while revenue and funding are both under US$200,000 in the prior 12 months. No credit card required.
Includes MCP and CLI access, and 1,000 Unity AI credits a month (14-day trial).
Student
Free
Enrolled students at accredited institutions.
Pro
US$210.00/month
Cheaper billed yearly. Required once revenue or funding passes US$200,000. Adds console and Apple Vision Pro publishing, expedited support, and more cloud storage.
2,000 Unity AI credits a month.
Enterprise
Custom, via sales
Required above US$25 million revenue. Adds build automation, read-only source access, and an extra year of LTS support.
3,000 Unity AI credits a month.
Industry
Required, not optional
For applications outside games and entertainment once company finances exceed US$1,000,000. Industry customers may not use Personal.
Four things a newcomer wouldn't guess
- Personal is games and entertainment only. Build a training simulator or an architectural visualisation and you're on a different licence track entirely — see what counts as industry use.
- The US$200,000 threshold is revenue OR funding. Raise money with zero revenue and you still have to upgrade to Pro.
- Consoles require Pro. Personal cannot publish to PlayStation, Xbox or Switch, no matter how small the team.
- You can't mix plan types within a business, and you can't downgrade. Choose the tier that matches where the business is headed, not just where it is now.
One thing that doesn't change across tiers: you own what you make with it.
Worth knowing: a large part of Unity's business is advertising and monetisation services — Unity Ads, ironSource, LevelPlay, Tapjoy — not just the engine. If you only read the engine pages, you wouldn't know the company sells that too.
