About abilityNEWS
Our purpose
abilityNEWS is a Canberra newsroom covering the NDIS and disability policy — the hearings, the reforms, the fraud inquiries, and the technology entering the scheme, like the automated planning tools covered in our reporting on AI in NDIS planning. The scheme affects hundreds of thousands of participants, and the decisions being made about it are often easier to find in a Senate committee transcript than in plain language anywhere else. That's the gap this newsroom exists to close.
How we work
Reporting here splits into two speeds: Big Stories are the longer investigations — where a policy change is actually heading, and who it affects — and Daily Briefs are the shorter, faster updates on what happened that day. We follow NDIS policy specifically rather than disability affairs broadly, which means fewer stories, but more of them tracked from hearing to legislation to outcome instead of covered once and dropped.
