Contra Memories
First Impressions
Contra was the first game of my childhood that looked incredibly cool but that I was completely unable to beat. Two shirtless action heroes spraying bullets across the whole screen, and a single hit sent you back to square one — a kind of tension Super Mario never gave me. My cousin came to stay over Chinese New Year and single-handedly pushed the game to the later stages, while my entire contribution was shouting "watch out, watch out!" from the sidelines.
The Code Burned Into My DNA
What really made Contra legendary wasn't the game itself — it was the code that almost everyone who ever played on a Xiaobawang can still recite by heart. Enter it on the title screen, and your lives jump straight from 3 to 30:
UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A
The first time my cousin recited that sequence to me, his tone was as solemn as if he were casting a spell — I treated it like a martial-arts secret technique on the spot. It was only later I learned it's called the "Konami Code."
| Most memorable level | Stage 3's snowmobile chase / the pulsing energy core in the final level |
|---|---|
| Cheat code status | Even with 30 lives, still routinely wiped out on the final stage |
| Reputation back then | "Fastest fingers in the room" (really just mashing buttons) |
