About the Keeper of this Corner
Hi, I'm Junyan. By day I write code; by night (and most lunch breaks) I think about the ocean far more than is strictly reasonable for someone who lives inland. This page has existed in one form or another since I first discovered you could make text blink, and it has never once had a proper redesign, because a proper redesign would ruin it.
Why an Ocean Corner?
I grew up visiting rockpools with a bucket and a bad attitude about getting my shoes wet, and I've never really stopped. This site is the web version of that bucket: a small, slightly chaotic collection of things I find wonderful about the sea, kept somewhere I control instead of scattered across five apps that might vanish tomorrow.
Favourite Creatures, In No Particular Order
- The mantis shrimp --- it can see colours we can't even name, and it punches like a bullet. Total menace, total icon.
- The dumbo octopus --- lives near the sea floor, flaps around like a cartoon elephant, wants nothing to do with any of us.
- The giant Pacific octopus --- reportedly recognises individual humans and reportedly holds grudges. Respect.
If any of that sounds like your kind of thing, drift over to Ocean Links for more, or leave a note in the Guestbook on your way out.
