Week 6 Tutorial: Secretary Problem Simulator

Play the optimal-stopping game against your own intuition, then check it against the 1/e rule

27 March 2028

Before the tutorial

Nothing to prepare — this session is the interactive lab for week 6’s lecture. Your gut strategy will be recorded before the maths gets a chance to embarrass it.

In the tutorial

Everyone runs the same simulator: a sequence of ranked candidates arrives one at a time, no recall, one slot to fill. First round, use your own gut strategy and record your stopping point. Second round, apply the 1/e rule exactly. Compare success rates across the room, then debrief on where the rule matched intuition and where it didn’t.

Afterwards

The gap between your round-one strategy and the optimal rule is the actual content of the week — not the rule by itself, but what your intuition was missing that the rule accounts for.

Secretary Problem Simulator

Monday 27 March 2028

What happens in the room

  1. Round one: run the simulator using your own gut stopping strategy, and record your stopping point before seeing the result
  2. Round two: run it again applying the 1/e rule exactly — reject the first ~37% outright, then take the next candidate who beats everyone so far
  3. Compare success rates across the room
  4. Debrief on where the rule matched your intuition and where it didn't
