Week 11 Lab: Redesign Studio
Dedicated studio time to build your integrative redesign and get feedback before week 12's defense
3 May 2027
Before the lab#
Come with a product already chosen, and the packaging it currently ships in (a photo is fine if you don’t have the physical item).
In the lab#
- Justify the choice — state why your chosen product’s current packaging is a genuine redesign opportunity: what’s wrong with it, or what trade-off it’s currently making that you think is wrong.
- Work the six constraints — for each of flute/board, cubic weight, sustainability-claim honesty, returns economics, compliance, and accessibility, state what your redesign does. “Unchanged, because—” is a valid answer if you can justify it; “I haven’t thought about that one yet” is not.
- Name your hardest trade-off — identify the one pair of constraints that pull against each other hardest in your redesign, and practise defending your choice out loud with a partner.
- Get feedback — swap with another pair. Their job is to find a seventh constraint (from any earlier week) your redesign hasn’t considered, if one exists.
Afterwards#
This studio session is direct preparation for the final project. See the Assessments page for the full brief, and bring your work to week 12’s defense.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you have chosen one real, currently-sold product (not Apple, lululemon, or OnTheList) and stated why its packaging is a genuine redesign opportunity, not a solved problem
- you can state, for each of the six constraints from Monday's lecture, what your redesign does about it — including "unchanged, because—" where that is the right call
- you have identified the one constraint your redesign trades hardest against another, and can defend that trade-off out loud
