Week 8 Lab: Reveal Design Lab
Redesign your week 1 package's unboxing sequence using a specific choice-architecture concept, without touching the product inside
12 April 2027
Before the lab#
Bring back your week 1 package, plus whatever notes you have from weeks 2 and 4 on its material and cubic-weight cost.
In the lab#
- Pick a concept — from Monday’s lecture, choose one choice- architecture idea (default path, salience, framing, sequencing) to apply.
- Redesign the reveal — sketch or describe a change to your package’s opening sequence that uses that concept. The product, its price and its ISTA-relevant protection (week 3) must not change — only the packaging and the order in which things become visible or accessible.
- Cost it — using week 2’s material logic or week 4’s cubic-weight formula, estimate whether your redesign is roughly cost-neutral, or adds a real cost. If it adds cost, say where.
- Defend it — in pairs, explain why your redesign is worth (or isn’t worth) that cost, given what it’s trying to do to perceived value.
Afterwards#
Keep your sketch. Week 10 asks a related but different question about the same unboxing moment: not what it makes someone feel, but who can physically manage it at all.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name which choice-architecture concept from Monday's lecture (default, salience, framing, or another you can define) your redesign uses, and where physically in the box it appears
- your redesign changes only the packaging and the unboxing sequence — not the product, its price, or its actual protection level from weeks 2-3
- you can state, in one sentence, whether your redesign pulls your package toward brand-experience logic, and at what cost (material, assembly time, box complexity) from earlier weeks
